We had the honour of visiting the beloved children’s writer Vandumaama (V. Krishnamurthy) during the final years of his life, along with a few friends. In every word he spoke, he believed with unwavering conviction that, “There must be a good magazine for children in Tamil. Whether it comes out weekly or monthly, it should be vibrant, rich in quality, and beautifully made. We must never compromise on its standards. Wherever in the world a good story is told, our children should have the chance to read it in Tamil. Imagination and wonder must take root in their minds and grow wild like a forest. This is my only prayer, and I will carry this wish with me until my last breath.” We saw his dream as a sacred message from a wise elder who had spent over sixty years in the world of publishing and Thumbi was born as a tribute to his wish.
